In 1973, Bill Simpson crashed his Indy Car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "After the crash, the helmet looked perfect but my head wasn't," he recalls. The role of the helmet was about to change. Bill Simpson's vision of the modern helmet in 1973 seems obvious today. The helmet shell should partly disintegrate and dissipate the impact energy over the body of the helmet while eliminating the likelihood of punctures. After the shell had done its job, the liner then does the rest. And so begins Simpson's involvement the design and manufacture of the modern helmet. Simpson's 80,000 square foot facility in New Braunfels, Texas, is dedicated to Simpson Helmet production. Warning/Disclaimer: Motorsports are dangerous.
