Shifter Karts, or Super Karts, are similar to the 100cc air cooled go karts
that have been raced in the United States since the 1950's. Although
enormously popular in Europe, South America, and parts of Asia, karting
in the United States has been referred to as America's "best kept secret."
Although these 100cc karts are capable of high top speeds, sometime in
excess of 80mph, they cannot match the speed nor the acceleration that
their 125cc water-cooled contemporaries can provide. With six speed
sequential gearboxes and horsepower in excess of 40, they are capable of
0-60mph acceleration in about 4 seconds and top speeds over 125mph.
The handling performance of these high tech vehicles can produce lateral
forces that approach 3G's.
These karts provide performance that is not possible in cars other than super high dollar cars such as Formula Atlantics or Indy Lights. Shifterkarts provide this high performance at a very reasonable price (a few thousand, instead or tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars). The proliferation of the Shifter Kart has enabled participation in a high performance and very competitive form of motor racing that before now was prohibitively expensive for most people. These facts, along with the recent formation of SKUSA, has meant a literal explosion in the number of racers participating in this motorsport. Not only are amateurs getting in on the action, but professional race drivers such as Memo Gidley and Alex Baron run shifterkarts in the off-season to hone their skills. There are shifterkart classes for everyone from novices as well as professional drivers. There are also 80cc classes for both junior and senior drivers. We sincerely hope that the growth of this great sport will continue as it has over the past few years. If you have ever felt the need for speed, we may have your ticket. |
